This project was a key part of the larger Elwha River Restoration Project, which aimed to return the river to its natural state to support spawning Chinook salmon. The work included four main components:

  • Elwha River Levee Improvements
  • Elwha Surface Water Intake (ESWI)
  • Elwha Water Treatment Plant (EWTP)
  • Crown Z Road Improvements
Elwha Surface Water Intake and Water Treatment
The Elwha Surface Water Intake (ESWI) involved building a new levee, modifying a fish hatchery, and making in-water changes to protect the area from flooding. It also included reconfiguring and rebuilding the Lower Crown Z Road.
Downstream from the ESWI, the Elwha Water Treatment Plant (EWTP) was built to remove suspended sediments from the water. This treated water is used for industrial, municipal, and fisheries applications. The EWTP included an 80 CFS Influent Pump Station, four 110-foot diameter Sedimentation Tanks, two Slurry Pump Houses, seven Mix Tanks, and a Chemical Feed Building. The Effluent Distribution Structure was built to supply water to multiple users.
Watts-Delhur completed three seasons of in-water work in a single season in a remote area. The company also maintained a minimal environmental impact in this sensitive location. Awards and Recognition.
The project was recognized with several prestigious awards:
  1. 2011 Aon Build America Award (Merit Winner, Municipal & Utilities New category)
  2. 2011 ABC Eagle of Excellence Award
  3. 2011 Build Washington Grand Award
