The West Damietta Power Plant, along with the Assiut Power Plant, was a fast-track project that collectively added 1,500 MW to Egypt's national grid in a record six months. A consortium, including Orascom Construction, then converted both plants from simple cycle to combined cycle under an EPC + Finance model. This conversion increased their total capacity by 50%, reaching 2,250 MW, without needing extra fuel. Initially, the West Damietta project was a 500 MW simple cycle power plant with four Frame 9E turbines. Orascom Construction's scope covered all engineering, construction, and commissioning, as well as the procurement of the balance of plant (BOP).
The conversion to a combined cycle plant involved a comprehensive EPC scope, including the installation of:

  1. One D202 steam turbine generator.
  2. Four heat recovery steam generators.
  3. One air-cooled condenser.
  4. All associated auxiliaries, BOP materials, and civil works.
