One calcium carbonate medium that occurs naturally is called calcite. The self-limiting characteristic of calcite is one of its benefits. When used correctly, it only raises pH to a level where it is no longer corrosive. It doesn't overcorrect in typical circumstances. Acidic liquids gradually dissolve calcium carbonate when it comes into contact with calcite, raising the pH and lowering the possibility of copper, lead, and other metals found in normal plumbing systems seeping out. Regular backwashing will keep the bed from packing, classifying it, and keeping service rates high.
As the calcite is depleted, the calcite bed will need to be periodically replaced, depending on pH, water chemistry, and service flow. Water hardness will rise when the calcium carbonate in the calcite neutralizes it, necessitating the use of a softener following the neutralizing filter.
The high flow neutralization characteristics of Clack Corosex and the slower-reacting low flow characteristics of Calcite can be used to increase the capacity to rectify low pH.
