OVERVIEW OF USAGE
Objectives
Fractionation columns divide mixtures into distinct fractions according to their respective boiling points. Components vaporize and condense to achieve the desired separation when temperature and pressure are controlled.
Principle of Operation
The principles of mass transfer and vapor-liquid equilibrium underlie the operation of fractionation columns. The mixture is heated to vaporization, and as the vapor rises, it comes into contact with the descending liquid reflux. Lighter components escape as vapor, while other components condense at varying heights.
Packing or Trays
The vapor-liquid contact is improved by trays or packing materials. Packing offers interfacial area for effective mass transfer, while trays are horizontal platforms that encourage mixing.
Sections on Distillation
Components with varying boiling points are separated by the rectification (bottom) and stripping (top) sections of columns. Components with intermediate boiling points are handled in intermediate sections.
Control and Optimization
Optimal separation efficiency, product purity, and energy consumption are achieved through precise control of temperature, pressure, reflux ratio, and tray/packing design.
