To know the importance of determining the particle size distribution in the filtration media, we can imagine a filter medium with a large gradient between the particles. When the filter medium is washed, the small particles rise and the large particles fall off, and when the filtration starts again, we find that the upper layer of the filter has the highest efficiency filtration, while the lower layers do not affect the quality of the filtered water, which speeds up the filter clogging and shortens the filter runtime.
