Ion Exchange Softening is a water treatment method that uses cation exchange to remove magnesium and calcium ions. This technique is frequently used to increase the lathering power of detergents, especially in laundry applications, or to reduce the tendency of the water used in boiler feeds to scale. This procedure involves exchanging the sodium ions that are present on a cationic resin for the calcium and magnesium ions in the water. The resin is made of R (SO3-), and it has a sodium ion (Na+) connected to it in a charged form. The calcium and magnesium ions in this resin displace the sodium ions as water flows through it and sticks to the resin. The displaced sodium ions are simultaneously released into the water, where they combine with other ions to replace the magnesium and calcium and form new compounds. As a result of this exchange, the water's calcium and magnesium ion levels are lowered, which successfully produces the intended softening effect.
