Heavy metals (HM) are any metallic chemical elements that are harmful at low concentrations but cause psychiatric disorders when eaten in excess. They are extremely hazardous to both animals and humans, can bioaccumulate through biological chains, and are non-biodegradable and persistent. Their toxicity can develop as a result of industrial emissions that pollute waterways, neighboring streams and rivers, contamination of irrigation water, fertilizer and metal-based pesticide application, harvesting process, transportation, storage, or sale.
