An electrical safety switch known as a circuit breaker, circuit disconnector, or circuit breaker (plural: circuit breakers) works automatically to guard against damage from excessive electrical current flowing through electrical circuits, such as those found in long-distance power lines, electric motors, and household appliances. A circuit breaker can be manually or automatically reset to return to normal functioning and guarantee that the circuit continues to function, unlike a fuse that needs to be replaced after only one action. A failure in the circuit or an additional external component, such as lightning, can cause high electrical current to flow across an electrical circuit.

From tiny devices that safeguard individual household appliances or low-current circuits to massive switches made to safeguard high-voltage circuits that supply electricity to entire cities, circuit breakers come in a range of sizes. A circuit breaker or fuse's main function is to prevent overcurrent by instantly cutting off power to a malfunctioning system. The term OCPD (Overcurrent Protective Device) is frequently used to describe this function.
Every circuit breaker is made to permit a certain maximum current to go through. An automatic mechanism within the circuit breaker opens the contact set (switches) and stops the current if the current exceeds this limit. Temperature-sensitive devices and electromagnets are among the mechanisms that open the contact set.
