A ball valve is a type of flow control device that regulates fluid flow by means of a hollow, perforated, pivoting ball. When the hole through the center of the ball aligns with the flow entrance, it is open; when the valve handle rotates it 90 degrees, the flow is blocked.[1] It is simple to visually verify the valve's condition because the handle is perpendicular to the flow when closed and flat in alignment with it when open.[2] The 1/4 turn in the shut position can be made either clockwise or counterclockwise.
Ball valves close firmly even after extended periods of inactivity and are dependable, long-lasting, and operate well after many cycles. These characteristics make them a great option for control and shutdown applications, where they are frequently chosen over globe valves and gates. However, in throttling applications, they lack the fine control of other alternatives.
