Package plants are utilized in trailer parks, highway rest stops, and rural communities with populations between 10 and about 100. The most prominent technology used for subsequent treatment and settlement is called cyclic activated sludge. This procedure combines activated sludge with incoming sewage, aerates it, runs off the settled sludge, re-aerates it, and then returns part of it to the headworks. Although efficient, the disadvantage is the need for exact timing, mixing, and aeration control. Sensor-integrated computer controls enable this level of precision. However, this system's intricacy and delicate nature render it less appropriate for settings with poorly maintained or unreliable controls, or where there may be fluctuations in the power supply. Alternatively, sequential batch reactor (SBR) plants are being more widely used throughout the world as a more reliable way to address wastewater treatment issues.
