Biological processes such as suspended growth bioreactors are integrated with membrane bioreactors (MBRs) to treat wastewater (WWT) through the use of microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF).A bioreactor with membranes is basically a substitute for the settlement tank used in the traditional activated sludge (CAS) system for the separation of solids from liquids. Better process control and significantly higher product water quality are provided to the end user by the MBR.
When compared to the traditional activated sludge process, the MBR process operates over a significantly different range of parameters.
SRT 5–20 days for MBR, 20–30 days for traditional system
F/M 0.05-1.5 d-1 for MBR systems, < 0.1 d-1 for conventional systems
