String-level rapid shutdown devices, on the other hand, are installed at the level of the string of solar panels. A string is a group of panels connected in series, and each string has its own rsd. When activated, these devices de-energize the entire string of panels, rather than individual modules. While not as precise as module-level shutdown devices, string-level RSDs still provide a significant improvement in safety compared to systems without any rapid shutdown measures in place.
Centralized rapid shutdown devices are installed at a single, central location in the solar energy system, typically near the inverter. When activated, these devices de-energize the entire solar array. While this approach may be more cost-effective and require fewer components, it may not provide the same level of safety as module-level or string-level RSDs, as there can still be residual voltage in the conductors leading to the centralized device.
