RAPID SHUTDOWN DEVICE FOR SOLAR BUILDING
The primary goal of rapid shutdown devices is to ensure the safety of people and property in the vicinity of solar installations. In emergencies like fires, utility workers and emergency responders need to be able to safely access the area without the risk of electrocution from energized solar panels. RSDs help mitigate this risk by quickly shutting down the system and reducing the voltage to a safe level, allowing for a more secure working environment.
HOW RAPID SHUTDOWN DEVICES WORK
De-Energizing Solar Arrays

Rapid shutdown devices work by de-energizing solar arrays in a matter of seconds. They are typically installed close to the solar panels, either at the module or string level. When an RSD is activated, it disconnects the conductors between the solar panels and the inverter, effectively cutting off the flow of electricity. This reduces the voltage in the system to a safe level, typically below 30 volts, within 30 seconds of activation.
Activation Methods
There are different ways to activate rapid shutdown devices, including manual switches, remote activation, or automatic detection of emergencies. Manual switches are usually installed at a central location, like an electrical panel, and can be operated by personnel on-site. Remote activation allows utility workers or emergency responders to shut down the system from a distance, which can be particularly helpful in cases of hazardous conditions or limited accessibility. Some RSDs are equipped with sensors that can detect emergencies, such as fires or sudden voltage fluctuations, and automatically initiate the rapid shutdown process.
