Ozone is a very reactive and unstable gas with a short half-life before it reverts back to oxygen. It can be produced artificially with an ozone generator, by lightning, or by the sun's ultraviolet rays reacting with the Earth's upper atmosphere (creating a protective ozone layer). Ozone has three oxygen atoms, whereas a normal oxygen molecule only has two. All bacteria, mold, yeast spores, organic materials, and viruses can be oxidized by ozone, the most potent and quick-acting oxidant, if exposed to enough of it.

Using ozone has the following benefits:
  1. Primarily, ozone functions as a disinfectant, efficiently eliminating biological pollutants.
  2. In order to filter iron, sulfur, and manganese out of solution, ozone also oxidizes and precipitates these elements.
  3. Numerous organic compounds, including those that lead to issues with taste and odor, will be oxidized and broken down by ozone.
  4. The water has no flavor or odor after ozonation.
  5. There is no remaining disinfection because ozone is composed of oxygen and turns back into pure oxygen.
The following are some drawbacks to using Ozone:
  1. Unwanted byproducts of ozone treatment, such as formaldehyde and bromate, can be hazardous to health if left unchecked.
  2. Electricity is needed to produce ozone in the home.
  3. Since ozone does not dissolve very well, a well-designed system that exposes all of the water to ozone is essential.
  4. Ozone is also ineffective at eliminating dissolved minerals and salts
  5. The process's efficacy depends on how well the ozone is mixed with the water.
