The chemical formula for ozone is O₃. It emits a sky blue fishy odor gas, which is dark black in liquid form and blue black in solid form. Ozone is mostly found in the ozone layer in the lower stratosphere, 20 kilometers above the Earth's surface. It absorbs, blocks, and weakens damaging short-wave UV photons, keeping them from reaching Earth.

Ozone damages the structure of microbial membranes by oxidizing oxygen atoms, resulting in a bactericidal action.

Unlike other fungicides, ozone's inactivation reaction to bacteria is always very fast: ozone can react with the double bond of bacterial cell wall lipids, penetrate into the bacteria's interior, act on proteins and lipopolysaccharides, and change the cell's permeability, resulting in bacterial death. Ozone also damages DNA by reacting with nuclear chemicals in cells, such as purines and pyrimidines found in nucleic acids. Ozone first acts on the cell membrane, causing damage to its constituent components and resulting in metabolic difficulties.
