It is easily understood that a mining operation comes to a grinding halt without functional pumps. Great care must be given to their maintenance- expenses resulting from repair and replacement can quickly bankrupt an operation. Apart from the wetted parts, many others will undergo regular wear and tear, including the expeller, expeller ring, pump case, shaft sleeve, mechanical seal, shaft, and bracket. Several factors affect the life of a slurry pump, including the properties of the material, the characteristics of the medium, and the structure and hydraulic parameters of the pump. Operating conditions must also be considered, but are not as highly prioritized. Corrosion and abrasion present the two greatest risks to the function of a pump. Regular pumping of chemicals, salts, and acids can result in corrosion, or slow dissolution of the materials a pump is constructed from. Abrasion occurs from constant friction from hard, sharp materials passing through a pump, resulting in layers being scraped away.
