Principles of Work
Developed in the 1970s, membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology is currently in widespread use across the globe. By using microorganisms to biodegrade organic matter in wastewater, this device combines traditional bioreactors with components of microporous filtration membranes. It then employs effective membrane filtration technology to achieve solid-liquid separation, successfully separating solid particles like microorganisms from clear water molecules, resulting in stable and effective wastewater treatment.
By using membrane separation technology, the membrane bioreactor process significantly improves the bioreactor's performance and raises the activated sludge concentration. Its sludge retention time (SRT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) are independently controllable. By combining conventional wastewater biological treatment technology with membrane separation technology in separation engineering, the MBR process not only does away with the need to build secondary sedimentation tanks but also significantly increases the efficiency of solid-liquid separation. The biochemical reaction rate is raised as a result of the rise in the concentration of activated sludge in the aeration tank and the appearance of particular bacteria, particularly dominant bacterial groups, in the sludge. In addition, many significant issues with conventional activated sludge processes have essentially been resolved by lowering the F/M ratio to minimize the quantity of excess sludge produced—even to zero.

MBR Application
1. Reusing Municipal Wastewater

Generates Class 1A effluent for toilet flushing and landscaping (turbidity < 0.5 NTU, COD < 30mg/L).
Compact designs work well in cities with limited space (e.g., rooftop WWTPs in high-rises).
2. Food & Beverage Industry
5,000–20,000 mg/L of COD is handled without the use of secondary clarifiers.
80%+ water is recovered for cleaning equipment.
3. Medical Facilities & Pharmaceuticals
Bacteria and viruses are blocked by 0.1μm membranes, which adhere to WHO reuse guidelines.
The cost of disposing of hazardous waste is decreased by low sludge yield.
4. Island and Remote Communities
Completely automated operation that eliminates the need for knowledgeable operators.
Scalable modular units for 50–5,000 users.

Benefits of MBR
  1. Good solid-liquid separation produces stable, high-quality effluent water.
  2. The remaining sludge production is low.
  3. Small footprint, no need for secondary sedimentation tank, centralized process equipment.
  4. Able to eliminate nitrogen and ammonia, as well as organic materials that are hard to break down.
  5. Eliminating the problems with conventional activated sludge processes, such as their propensity for sludge swelling.
  6. Convenient management and operation, simple automatic control
