For the purpose of reducing dissolved iron and manganese compounds from raw water supplies, birm is an effective and affordable medium. It can be applied to water treatment systems that are pressured or gravity fed. It facilitates the reaction between dissolved oxygen (D.O.) and iron compounds by acting as an insoluble catalyst. This black granular filter material is used in gravity or pressure systems to remove iron and/or manganese from water.
It has an iron and/or manganese precipitation-promoting active insoluble catalyst. Since iron is most frequently present, iron removal is Birm's typical use. Under the right circumstances, the water's dissolved oxygen and iron react when they come into contact with the Birm filter bed, causing the iron to precipitate as hydroxide. This material, which is flocculent, is filtered out in the Birm bed. The accumulated iron is flushed out by regular backwashing, which restores the Birm's functionality. Birm is not used in the process of removing iron.
