The term "Ceramic Membrane Filtration System," or CMS, refers to the entire set of filtration apparatus that uses inorganic ceramic membranes for fluid separation. FCM membrane, PCR honeycomb membrane, and CRM tubular membrane (also known as silicon carbide membrane) can all be used with CMS systems. For liquid separation, it functions as cross-flow or semi-cross-flow filtration. 
The CMS membrane filtration system can be designed and produced using a variety of materials, depending on the intended use. For instance, SUS304 or SS316L stainless steel is typically needed by the food and pharmaceutical industries. Steel lining rubber, FRPP, and titanium alloy can be employed in chemical or waste water applications where there are corrosive conditions. Users are advised to employ PCR membranes with PVC pipe for projects where cost is a concern.

The components of a full CMS membrane filtration system include membrane modules, ceramic membrane elements, pumps (feed, circulating, CIP, and other pumps), valves, instruments (flow, pressure, temperature, and liquid level), and auxiliary equipment (pre-filters, back flushing systems, and heat exchange filters). Control systems (MCC cabinets, program cabinets, PLCs, inverters, and other control systems), frames, and a few auxiliary storage tanks and public works are also included.
