Chemicals known as antiscalants are utilized to keep the RO membranes from fouling and scaling. Mineral fouling such as calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, silica, calcium fluoride, barium sulfate, and strontium sulfate can comprise scale. Before reaching the RO membranes, the antiscalant dose needs to be completed in order to break up calcium carbonate, sulfate precipitates, and other mineral fouling.
Because antiscalant reduces membrane fouling more effectively than any other pretreatment, it is the recommended choice for water systems. Extremely high recovery rates are achieved by processing very low-quality feed water with an antiscalant chemical. Antiscalant, when applied correctly, can extend the interval between membrane cleanings from a few weeks to years. Membrane systems for the water treatment industry would not be as successful without antiscalant.
