Sludge management is extremely difficult, especially for large wastewater treatment facilities that process hundreds of thousands or even millions of cubic meters every day. Large amounts of sludge are produced by such high influent rates, making quick, effective, and long-term solutions necessary to preserve operational viability and safeguard the environment. By using cutting-edge technologies to reduce sludge production at its source and increase its advantageous reuse potential, Sternove's integrated approach to sludge management starts at the very beginning of wastewater treatment. We understand that efficient sludge handling is essential to a sustainable circular economy and goes beyond simple disposal.
The first step in our solutions is the highly effective separation of solids using devices such as the High-Density Inclined Plate Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) apparatus. By effectively eliminating a variety of suspended solids and oil/grease from the influent, this technology lowers the initial organic load on biological processes downstream and, as a result, the volume of sludge produced overall.
Further upstream, our innovative Sternova Bio Plus (SBP) plays a pivotal role in sludge minimization. By significantly increasing the efficiency of organic pollutant degradation within biological ponds, the SBP minimizes the amount of organic matter that converts into excess biomass or sludge. It also promotes simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND), improving nitrogen removal and reducing nitrogen incorporation into sludge.
Optimized solids removal is further enhanced by sophisticated sedimentation techniques like High-Efficiency Sedimentation Tanks and Microsand Sedimentation. By quickly creating dense flocs, microsand sedimentation speeds up pollutant settling and lowers the footprint and time needed for sedimentation. This efficient separation translates directly to a more compact sludge volume, minimizing the need for costly conventional methods that demand more space and chemical addition.
The generated waste sludge from our systems has a much higher quality. The resultant sludge has a rich microbial medium and enzymes because of the natural characteristics of our microbial treatment materials and optimized biological degradation. The sludge is extremely amenable to additional biodegradation because of its superior quality. We take advantage of this to optimize its value, allowing it to be recycled into biogas for the production of renewable energy or converted into nutrient-rich biosolids that can be used as an agricultural amendment and for soil remediation. By producing energy and lowering disposal costs, this strategy not only boosts the economy but also promotes resource conservation and soil health.
Lastly, effective dewatering is guaranteed by our cutting-edge drying beds. These new designs minimize environmental impact by facilitating a high drying rate and taking ecosystems into account during engineering. Importantly, they don't emit any odors, which eliminates a common annoyance connected to conventional sludge handling. For complicated sludge problems, this integrated approach offers a viable and cost-effective solution.
