Chemicals called coagulants are used in water treatment to draw out suspended materials. The forces holding colloids apart are destabilized when the negative electrical charge on particles is neutralized by coagulation treatment. Coagulants used in water treatment are made up of molecules with a positive charge that neutralize charges when introduced to water and combined.
When smaller particles in water combine to produce larger aggregates known as flocs, the process is referred to as floculation in the context of water treatment. The compounds that promote floc formation are called flocculants. Chemicals for flocculation and coagulation are used in effluent wastewater water treatment procedures to remove particles, clarify water, soften lime, thicken sludge, and dewater solids.
